Advertising; The Backbone of Business

Monday 20 October 2008 @ 7:53 pm

Advertising has been the backbone of the business world since the Egyptian times and possibly even earlier than that. The Egyptians would use papyrus to advertise different political campaigns and there have been advertisements found on the walls of the ruins of Pompeii and ancient Arabia. So, advertising is not an invention of the 20th century but a mere tactic that was developed centuries ago. Advertising is a multi-billion dollar effort to help business owners get their message out about their products and services to consumers locally, nationwide or worldwide.

If it weren’t for advertising, the business world would not be as successful as it is each and every day. Advertisers place ads in hundreds of different places for consumers to see. Ads appear most commonly on television, radio, previews before movies, in magazines, on the sides of buses, on billboards, on business’ vehicles and in the daily newspaper. Advertising is an expensive, yet rewarding venture for a business owner. The most popular day of advertising in the United States is the Super Bowl each year. This is when companies release brand new television commercials that air during the most watched football game of the season. They do pay a pretty penny for the ad time though. Some slots for ads during the game cost around 3 million dollars for a 30 second spot.

Advertising spending will surpass 500 billion dollars worldwide by the year 2010 and will continue to increase as long as the public continues to consume goods. Advertising has gone through different modes of conveying a business owner’s message through the years. Advertising has developed from simple billboard pictures to elaborate television and radio spots that include special effects, famous actors, announcers and other important public figures. Nowadays athletes and actors have become focal points of advertising. These figures are paid a stipulated amount of money to sponsor someone’s product. The most recent example is Derek Jeter and Gatorade’s product G2.

Advertising, like the title says, is the backbone of business. If business owners and major corporations did not use any means of advertising then their product’s information would never reach the public and it wouldn’t sell on the market. This would more than likely put them out of business. If businesses wish to be successful in selling products and goods they must delve into the advertising world to reach their clientele.

There are two ways for advertisers to determine how to market a product on television or on radio. For television, advertisers look at the Nielson Ratings each quarter to see how many people across the country tuned in to a specific station or show. For radio, advertisers look at the Arbitron Ratings to see how many people tuned into a specific time slot or radio station. Both of these forms of ratings measurements are not 100 percent effective though and some times have to be taken with a grain of salt. The ratings systems are based off of a handful of people that record in a booklet what they have watched on television or listened to on the radio and then it is calculated for the remainder of the country.

Advertising is the backbone of business and without advertising the retail market would not be as successful as it is today.

Digital Advertising Captures Customer Data With New Interactive Technology

Monday 20 October 2008 @ 1:26 pm

With giant retailers like WalMart and others investing heavily in point of purchase digital advertising, we can safely say that digital signs have really arrived as a merchandising and product promotion tool.

The strengths of digital advertising are well known. One of the commonly cited weaknesses is the lack of any effective means to measure not only the traffic walking by a digital sign, but also a customer’s response and level of engagement with the sign.

As interactive digital advertising begins to supplant traditional digital signs, new opportunities are emerging for measuring audience volume and response.

Gauging Customer Response

People of a certain age will likely remember being stopped in a shopping mall by someone with a clipboard looking for participants in a survey about shopping habits. If you recall these moments, you likely also remember being somewhat annoyed or brushing the person off with a polite “too busy” as you pointed to your watch.

Retailers knew then, as they know now, that intruding on shoppers in this way detracts from their shopping experience and can build resentment over the long term.

In lieu of live questioning, some retailers now ask shoppers to participate in online surveys, with links usually provided at the bottom of store receipts. Shoppers are enticed with chances to win gift cards or other prizes. The downfall there, of course, is participation. Just like the clipboard-toting mall surveyor, online surveys are easy for shoppers to ignore.

Into this environment comes digital advertising. Before the addition of interactivity, evidence of the impact digital signs had on shopper behavior was pretty much anecdotal – a certain video loop played at a certain time and, coincidentally or not, sales for the advertised item went up.

Interactive or hybrid digital signs, on the other hand, are tailor-made for tracking customer data. They can tell retailers whether or not customers are responding to the signs and, if they are, what triggered their response.

How Digital Advertising Tracks Customer Behavior

To demonstrate how digital advertising systems can track customer data, let’s look at three methods of interactivity:

• Indirect interaction. This interaction is not initiated by the customer. It usually involves some kind of motion sensor that triggers content to change when a customer stops near the sign and, in theory, takes a closer look. The digital advertising system can capture data about what was playing when the customer stopped so the retailer knows what kind of content is most effective.

• Touch screen. This interaction is initiated by the customer and, as such, is more powerful as a research tool. The customer is attracted to a digital sign and given options to touch the screen for sales and promotional information, to print a coupon, to check product availability and so on. The software that runs the digital advertising system can track what was playing when the customer touched the screen and which selections the customer made to see which options engaged the customer most. Tracking time of day against this data paints a picture of what kind of shoppers are in the store at various day parts, so advertising can be better targeted to them.

• Next generation. This option involves the use of cell phones and PDAs. Cell phones are part of the so-called “next gen” in digital advertising. A call to action is displayed on the signs, prompting viewers to text in to receive a coupon or enter a contest. As described in a 2006 article on the Media in Canada Website, this method is akin to tracking the click-through rate on a Website ad because it tells the retailer exactly how many responses there were for each call to action.

With interactive technologies capturing the kind of data that advertisers and marketers want to see, digital advertising – already gaining popularity as a marketing tool - is poised to become an even stronger presence in today’s retail landscape.

Don’t Follow the Hard Way in MLM

Monday 20 October 2008 @ 1:04 pm

Are you one of those distributors that follow the hard way to build their home based business in MLM? Do you practice the traditional recruiting methods as they are passed down to you from the company and your sponsor? Well, then you are not the only one as there are countless other that insist on following a bad marketing practice.

There are many distributors in MLM companies that even today are trying to tap into their warm market in order to get referrals for their network marketing opportunity. Of course it’s not their fault, as many companies promote this practice to their members and their upline insists on that as never learned another way to do prospecting. It’s like the blind man leading the blind. They learned a method and whether it works or gets them any results they pass it down to those few unfortunate that happened to recruit more out of lack than skill.

Of course, that method of going through your friends and relatives, in order to build your downline in your MLM opportunity, it only works for a few distributors that have the people skills and can convince their audience to do whatever they want. For the rest of the members that are trying to build their home business in that multilevel marketing company, it never works and sometimes it can destroy friendships or alienate you from those you know. It is totally irrational to risk losing your friends trying a recruiting method that is proven that it never works for the majority.

One of the things that traps new distributors in this practice is the seemingly easiness to work your network marketing business that way. No new skills are required, no investment, no work, and you don’t need to learn anything new at all, just go and talk to them. But as you understand, in today’s world that’s not a serious way to build an MLM business, nor any business at all. Long have gone the days when you could talk to a few people about your multilevel marketing opportunity and have some sign up immediately. Today things have changed. We live in a totally different world and if a distributor wants to succeed in this new environment it has to change as well.

Today there are great alternatives that someone can use in order to recruit new members and acquire new customers for his network marketing products. Prospecting methods that really do work and can help someone build a big downline and start making an income. And no, they are not harder than the traditional method that brought a bad name to the multilevel marketing industry. Actually it’s much more harder to go after your friends and relatives, face rejection from people you know, and destroy your good relationship with them.

When you consider all this, it seems much more easier the alternatives like using the Internet for advertising, promotion, and making sales. And you don’t need to rely on online MLM exclusively. There are also offline methods for advertising your opportunity like making use of the print media, like newspapers or magazines. And while you need to have some knowledge on how to do those things, trust me, it’s a lot easier and you carry less emotional burden than going through your warm market.

So stop wasting your time on chasing friends and relatives and embark on the new prospecting and recruiting methods that can make the difference to your network marketing home business. Your time is very precious to waste it on things that don’t give you any results.

Learn how to succeed in any MLM business opportunity. Tools and training that can set you apart from the competition and help you build a thriving network marketing home business. Don’t keep yourself back from becoming a top recruiter in your company, get the knowledge you need now.

Affiliate Marketing to Weather the Recession of 2009

Monday 20 October 2008 @ 10:37 am

Niche affiliate marketing in recession proof industries will always be a way to keep cash flowing in any economy. Some products and services people will always feel they need or want.

The recession of 2009 will likely be a scary one for many, if for no other reason than the doom and gloom reported in the media every minute of every day. But it doesn’t have to be scary. If you normally listen to the news/talk channels start limiting the amount of time you tune in. Instead, use this little piece of modern technology you are looking at to get your mind off of the bad news.

The American Dream used to be understood as owning your own home, your own little piece of the universe. But more and more you hear that owning you own business has become a big part of the dream. And there is no better way to start than internet marketing. Why? It is relatively easy and inexpensive. There is little overhead, no inventory needed (that can’t be stored on your hard drive or the internet), and you can progress at your own pace because you are the boss.

For someone just starting out, you may wonder how money is made on the internet. You know it is being done because there is no shortage of online gurus and articles (like this one) telling you of the untold riches being made online. But if you are like me, an extra $500-1000/month would be sufficient. One of the best and quickest ways to do that is niche affiliate marketing.

A niche is a subject that many, and maybe even you, share an interest in, like indoor roses. You could create you own report, manual, or book on everything you know about growing indoor roses. Or you could find one that has already been written and get permission as an affiliate to sell it to that niche.

But is the growing indoor roses niche an interest that is likely to survive through the recession? Well, we will probably be spending more time at home to save money so our roses would likely get more attention during this period. So that might be an example of a recession proof niche. Learn how to market to the indoor roses niche though and you can market to any niche at will.

Some of the many advantages to selling someone else’s product are no inventory to keep, no employees to hire and deal with, and reduced bookkeeping requirements. Internet marketing also lends itself well to having most every task put on autopilot; set it up once and, with minimal attention, it works 24/7 for you.

You have some choices. You can work in a recession proof industry, or you can market to people or companies that have ties to these industries, or both. Pick the choice you have the most control over, learn all you can about how to do it while you make money at it (I recommend niche affiliate marketing at first), and never worry again about the state of the economy.

Dickie Smith has worked in financial services for over 30 years. He supports niche affiliate marketing as a good way to recession proof your income. For further discussion of recession proof industries see the Recession Proof Industries Report available through http://yrtimenow.com

Affiliate Marketing – Don’t Reinvent the Wheel

Monday 20 October 2008 @ 10:30 am

Affiliate marketing is both new and old. It is new in that it has a new delivery system – the internet. It is old in that it is similar to the past sales systems where sales reps sell a product that someone else owns, earning a commission for doing so. The difference in the two is significant. In contrast to sales representation, affiliate marketing means no inventory having to be carried, low-cost business, unlimited income potential, worldwide customer base, low risk due to no-cost or low-cost startup, and twenty-four hour business due to the nature of internet marketing. It is THE way to make money in sales. Affiliate marketing makes it easier than ever to make a good income with a minimum of time and money.

How do you profit from affiliate marketing? You invest a minimum of money and time in promoting someone else’s product on mail lists or websites. You have to find the right product and the right way to promote that product. Often, article marketing is the perfect way to promote the product, involving writing information filed articles about topics related to your product you wish to promote. For example, if you are promoting a dog training book, you might right articles about dog health, filled with useful information. The key to this is search engine optimization (SEO), meaning you discover the right keywords that will bring traffic to your site or article, but that is not so popular that you have to compete with thousands of competitors.

There is three ways you get paid in affiliate marketing. One is pay per click, where every time someone clicks on your affiliate link that is either in your article, in your email signature, or on your website, a certain, agreed-upon amount is added to your account. This compensation is usually very low, from a few cents to a dollar or so, because just clicking through is no guarantee that the person will purchase the product. Still, every click through is a potential customer, either immediately or at sometime in the future. Many affiliate programs record the customer identifying information so that if they come back and buy later, you get credit for the sale. Another method of compensation is pay per sale. This involves only getting paid if the customer actually buys the product. Usually the compensation is the most with this method, ranging from 10% to as much as 75%. Some affiliate programs just give a set compensation amount, but they usually fall within that percentage range. Another method of compensation is based on pay per lead. In this method, you get a small amount deposited every time someone registers at the merchant website after clicking on your affiliate link. Again, some programs also keep a record of this contact and pay a percentage if a sale is made.

What are some keys to success in affiliate marketing? They include all of the following:

* High quality content – Whatever you use to promote your affiliate product, whether articles, emails, or websites, you need to provide good quality content that is related to your product. This content needs to be updated periodically so your potential customers will come back repeatedly. This is especially important if you are promoting multiple products from the same merchant or the same or related products.

* A newsletter or email campaign – This is often done using an autoresponder which entails very little effort on your part past the initial setup. Just don’t forget to update if you are using an autoresponder so that your content is always current to marketing trends and news that benefits you. Use this method to present new information, make frequent contact with good relevant content, or to let the customer know when you update your website with new information.

* Networking – This involves joining email lists, blogs, or webrings. Any time you can take advantage of someone else’s traffic, you have to work less.

* Optimize your content – Optimizing content means knowing what are the popular keywords, but keywords that are not so competitive that you may never reach the first page of the search engines. Search engine optimization (SEO) just means making your content such that searches for certain keywords will mean your listing will be on the first page.

* Tracking results – You can’t know what is working or not working unless you have a method to track what is happening. Track ads, articles, website visits, ROI, click throughs, and any other information that will tell you what is working and what is not as effective.

To succeed at affiliate marketing, it is important to choose the right product, right merchant, and the right marketing method. Keep all the above affiliate marketing tips in mind and you will enjoy success in affiliate marketing and earn a very decent income with very little investment of time and money.

Tips For Using Bum Marketing

Monday 20 October 2008 @ 9:10 am

What is bum marketing? Can you use it to increase website traffic, and can it be an important part of your affiliate marketing strategy? How can you start a bum marketing campaign?

We’ll look at these questions and more. Bum marketing is just a type of article marketing. It is called bum marketing because, the author of the term says, it is a method that even a bum off the street can do. It is article marketing, but with a twist.

What is article marketing? It is simply a method where you write articles based on a topic, using keywords you have researched. You include your resource box to give readers the opportunity to click on your links to go to your website or blog for more information and ultimately to buy your product or affiliate product.

What is the difference between article marketing and bum marketing? The main difference is the focus. In article marketing, the idea is to get the author’s website on the main page of search engines, thus enabling you to increase search engine traffic. In bum marketing, the idea is to get the article on the main page. This is much easier than getting the website to the main page. This is because Google loves rich content, and since article directories provide this content, they rank on the main page. If you place your articles in directories, as bum marketing focuses on, you will use the ranking of the article directories to your advantage.

Tips for using bum marketing in your advertising campaign include:

1. Find a lucrative niche, balancing between popularity and competitiveness.

2. Find a product for this niche. Information products can be found through Clickbank. You may have your own product, but can make money just promoting other’s products.

3. Write at least ten articles based on these keywords and products.

4. Write killer titles for each article. The title should include the keyword or keyword phrase just as you researched it.

5. Create a blog account and blog related to your topics. Include a link to your affiliate product in the blog.

6. Create great resource boxes with your personal information in them. Create more than one. Link to your blog in the resource box.

7. Submit your articles to article directories, varying the resource boxes that all point to the product that relates to your article. Make sure the product and the article content relate.

8. Repeat the above steps with a new product, blog, and articles.

The steps above are just an overview of the topic. Learn as much as you can about each one, searching for all the information you can glean about each in order to use the tip to the fullest possible.

Article writing is not hard. It seems intimidating at first, but as you work through it, things become easier. You don’t have to be a great writer, and don’t even have to have excellent grammar. However, to be seen as a professional, you should strive to write as well and as correctly as you possibly can. You will get better as you repeat these steps.

Bum marketing is simply article marketing taken up a notch, made easier and more to the point. The goal is not to get to the top of the search engine pages with your site. It is simply to have your article on that page. Then, surfers looking for your keyword information will click on your article, and will ultimately be led to your affiliate site to buy your product.

Though you might not make a lot of money with each article, the sheer volume of all the articles your write will bring you a lucrative income. Just a dollar or two on each article, earned daily due to click throughs, can lead to a good income without much effort.

Another source of income using this method is through paid ads shown on your article site. Getting involved in paid for ads will bring a small but consistent additional source of income.

Additionally to sales you might get, you can build a huge mailing list by offering a free report or newsletter that people sign up for. As any marketer knows, a mailing list is a gold mine. So, even if you don’t strive for sales, at least give the opportunity for readers to sign up for your newsletter or free report.

10 Ways Video Marketing Can Help Your Business

Monday 20 October 2008 @ 8:16 am

Video marketing has emerged as one of the premier ways to market your business online. With the emergence of video sites like YouTube, many people have gone to video as their choice of marketing mediums. Whilst it is popular, many people overlook it completely.

What can video marketing do for your business?

Let’s take a look at some of the key benefits:

1. Video marketing allows your product to be “test-driven” online. When people shop for something in person, they can actually look at it and see how to use it. Traditional forms of online marketing didn’t allow this. However, with a video, you can show people exactly how your product works.

2. You can find people who are looking for exactly what you have to offer. When someone performs a search on YouTube, they will be given a list of videos related to that search term. Your video will pop up and they will watch it.

3. You will become an expert in the eyes of the customer. When they see you in a video demonstrating a product, you become a specialist in that industry. There is something prestigious about seeing someone in a well-produced video segment.

4. You will gain the customers trust. When they can actually see and listen to you, they will realise that you are a real person. You are not some faceless salesman behind a sales page. You are actually someone that they can relate to.

5. The advertising is free. You don’t have to pay Google or some other company for Pay per Click ads. You just make a video and then post it. Eventually people will start to watch it and buy your product.

6. You can get creative. The types of videos that you can make to promote your product are endless. You don’t have to stick to the traditional, boring forms of advertising. The types of videos you can make are limited only by your imagination. If you want to make a funny video, go for it! No one is stopping you and they will all work.

7. You will get a regular flow of traffic. Sites like YouTube have millions of people watching videos every day. This means you will have an abundance of potential customers.

8. You can create emotional attachments with your customers. When they see you and like you they will be more loyal. This creates the possibility of having repeat customers in the future.

9. It’s extremely easy. It doesn’t take a technical genius to accomplish making a video anymore. With the ease of use of many of these sites you can make a video in a few minutes.

10. You can market your product or service around the clock. Whether it’s 4 a.m. or Sunday afternoon, someone can watch your video and buy your product. This is multiplying your efforts and can create massive amounts of sales.

Overall, video marketing is a great tool that any serious Internet marketer should look into. While it might not be for everyone, it is simple enough and effective enough that you should definitely consider it.

Adrian Bold is Head of Search at Impact Media Ltd, a specialist Search Engine Optimisation company based in the UK. They work with a wide range of businesses helping them to save money and make more sales with video marketing services.

Electronic Signs – Add Value With News And Audience Interaction

Monday 20 October 2008 @ 5:22 am

Electronic signs have been part of the retail business environment for a while. They have succeeded in marketing products, upselling customers, promoting sales and reducing perceived wait times. Using colorful video, eye-catching images and persuasive text, they have proven to be an exciting and attractive advertising medium.

One might think that, having served their purpose, electronic signs have reached a bit of a plateau; that there is little else to invent with them, save for more cool video or graphics. In reality, there is still value to be added and some uncharted territory for creators of electronic signs to explore.

News, News and More News

Imagine the subway rider waiting for a delayed train. For this person time is dragging on, each second seeming like an eternity. Looking at the electronic signs around her, she sees large ads and a small segment devoted to the weather.

Now imagine the electronic signs with a news feed, even just headlines. The person becomes engaged. She is not passively watching the graphics on the screen, but actively reading the content. Time passes more quickly and she gets on the train feeling that her time was not completely wasted because she saw the day’s latest news stories.

According to a 2008 study by the Pew Center in the United States, gathering news from non-traditional sources has become the new norm, especially for young, financially well-off, and highly educated women and men. The study compared online news sources to traditional sources, but its results apply equally to digital signs.

More than a third of respondents noted that keeping up with the news is important for their work. A tendency for getting news in small bits has also emerged lately, with a large majority of those aged 18-64 saying that they often come across important news items while browsing the Internet for other types of information.

Bottom line for businesses that use electronic signs? Use your signs for more than marketing. Information is valued by your audience, especially the coveted young and affluent demographics. They want to be in the loop at work and they are happy getting their news on the fly.

Audience Participation

There is enormous potential for broader application of the already powerful technology behind digital signs. One of the areas businesses are starting to exploit is interactivity.

The Pew Center study cited above notes that cell phone use has taken off in the United States. In 2000, only 53% of Americans had a cell phone. In 2008 that number had risen to 83%. The cell phone is also emerging as one of the keys to making electronic signs interactive.

Companies are using this technology to truly involve viewers in their electronic signs. Using text messaging, viewers can enter contests, get coupons delivered to their phones and, for fun, respond to polls. This type of interactivity not only engages the audience, it also gives businesses a great way to track the effectiveness of their digital signs.

Bottom line? Explore the possibilities of interactivity in your electronic signs. This functionality is considered the next generation in digital signage networks. Getting on board now puts you ahead of your competition and enhances your image in the eyes of your young consumers.
